Wallingford police say a 20-year-old man died Friday while being treated for injuries from a fight involving a Samurai-style sword.

A Southington teenager has been charged with assault in the case, police said Saturday.

Authorities say Shane Smith of Wallingford died Friday at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. He had been hospitalized with cuts and other injuries from a fight Thursday, but authorities say the injuries initially were not considered life-threatening.

Wallingford police say they charged a 17-year-old male with first-degree assault Friday, but did not release his name because of his age. He was being held Saturday on $100,000 bond.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Smith's autopsy results could not be released Saturday because more studies were planned.

VICTORVILLE, California (AP) - A homeless man who found a purse containing nearly $1,000 returned it to a needy mother of three - but admits he thought about keeping the cash.

The man, identified by the Victorville Daily Press only as Chris, told the newspaper that he had been trying to save $700 to move into an apartment.

"I can't say I was perfect because for a tenth of a second, I thought about taking it," he said. But "it wasn't my money," he added.

Nancy Daniels, who had lost the purse, said she was grateful.

"I'm going to be able to pay the rent because of his honesty," she said.

Daniels said she offered the man $50, but he refused the reward.

Daniels, of Rancho Cucamonga, had cashed a check from her parents and forgot her purse on the roof of her car in a Target parking lot. As she settled her children inside and drove off, the purse fell off.

It was found by Chris, who was living in the nearby High Desert Homeless Services shelter. He found Daniels' cell phone and began dialing numbers. He got a friend, who called Daniels.

Chris has become a celebrity at the shelter -- which he finds puzzling.

"I just did what I thought was right," he said. "I know I'm homeless, but she has three kids. ... It seemed too important."

BOISE, Idaho (Aug. 15) -- After her older brother was shot in the head, his remains were burned in front of her, an 8-year-old girl told a police officer in a gut-wrenching tape played for jurors deciding whether a convicted sex offender should die for his crimes.

Shasta Groene spoke to Coeur d'Alene police Officer Shane Avriett on July 2, 2005, shortly after she was rescued from weeks of torture and despair.

3 Interesting things about sunburn

I found this while sifting through some wired articles and saw this as interesting to me so I thought I'd share it.

1 Early hominids may have developed a sensitivity to UV rays for the good of the species. Based on a study using blood plasma, just an hour in direct sunlight could cause a 30 to 50 percent drop in folate levels — and low folate is linked to both abnormal sperm and birth defects. Good news for nerds: It's survival of the palest!

2 World War II sailors were early adopters of sunscreen. The zinc oxide they smeared on their noses served to reflect and scatter UV light. Today's lotions have added organic compounds that absorb UV energy and dissipate it as heat.

3 The sun isn't all evil. It stimulates your skin to produce vitamin D, and one study suggests that 1,000 IUs of D per day reduces your risk of certain cancers by up to 50 percent. But that's not a free pass to bake: More than 15 minutes of exposure daily over 40 percent of your body might just be an invitation to skin cancer.

Companies that take an iron fist approach to fighting software piracy are generally best served by not lifting a pirate group\'s code themselves to fix their own product.

Ubisoft, the French video game developer and publisher, was recently caught with its pants down, releasing a pirated hack as an official fix.
